5 Star Wilson fires Wessie to victory
By Marty McKenna.

Westwood BB travelled to the Garscube complex in Maryhill for their 3rd game of the season, and after last week’s hard fought win against Greenview, they were high on confidence.  On an unfancied surface, it was the Wessie who set out their intentions early on.

Early chances came and went after a lot of good build up play and it was clear it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken.  After narrowly missing out on connecting to a cross, Stevie Nicholl collected the loose ball and fired a pinpoint cross of his own for the onrushing Wilson, who crashed a diving header into the net to make it 1-0, his first of what would be a fruitful day for the striker.  Another goal soon followed as the Wessie took a firm grip on the game.

Good interplay from midfield into the final third allowed Big Nick to lay of intelligently for John McGonigle to fire home from inside the penalty area and it wasn’t long til the 3rd was added. Paul Mochan created enough space for himself to square it to Davie, who coolly dispatched the ball beyond the outstretched arms of the keeper. After a few more half chances and solid defending, the Wessie went in at half time 3 up.

Despite not having his best day in front of goal, big Stevie was enjoying a productive day at the centre of the clinical build up play the Westwood team were displaying.  Straight from kick off in the 2nd half, he and Titch cleverly combined to create the 4th and realistically, the final nail in the coffin for Anniesland’s chances of getting anything from the game.  Straight from the whistle, Titch hared up the right flank, and Nicholl fired a long, high ball straight into his path.  Scott then crossed and after a stramash in the six yard box, Davie Wilson pounced to fire a convincing finish just inside the post to make it 4-0 and claim his hat-trick.

After a succession of corners due to the unrelenting Wessie pressure, the scoreline was increased to 5-0 and quickly 6-0, both thanks to the left boot of Chris Nicholl and the head of Danny Kellachan, although strangely, Danny’s napper was to be thanked 3 times !  His first of the day came from a superb corner from Chris to the back post, where Danny rose highest to power home from 4 yards.  His second ten minutes later was almost a carbon copy, only his initial header rebounded off the upright, only to see it come straight back to him and he made no mistake to make it 6.

A flash of controversy then ensued, after a slightly heavy first touch by Titch, the Anniesland forward lunged in with a horror shin high tackle on him.  Titch didn’t take kindly to the challenge and confronted the player, but after a bit of pushing and shoving, he was substituted as Michael Dolan took his place.

The game then rubber stamped it’s billing as the Davie Wilson show as he added 2 more goals to take his tally to 5 for the day.  Firstly a tremendous free kick from Chris Nicholl landed right on Wilson’s forehead, who brilliantly cushioned it across goal and into the bottom corner.   Then, after some excellent defending by skipper Graeme Lynn, he spotted Davie’s run, and fired a 60 yard ball right into his path.  The goalie rushed out to close the angle, but Wilson coolly lobbed it over his head and the ball bounced in to complete the rout.

A solid performance from back to front, and a well deserved victory and goals tally. With an important game next week, this result can only build confidence throughout the team.

Aye the Wessie.
