After a comfortable win in their previous match, Westwood headed to Glasgow’s east end to face Glasgow Nazarene. This was a game they would have to be prepared for as their opponents are the only side to take all 3 points against them this season. On a decent astrograss surface, both sides started well, with good passing on show.
It was the home side who threatened to break the deadlock first, a good move resulted in the Nazarene striker getting into the box and squaring for his team-mate, but he was at full stretch and put just wide from 9 yards. This acted as a warning for Westwood as they tightened up at the back and started to dominate proceedings, especially in midfield. They had a good chance when a McKenna goal kick was flicked on by McGonigle into Titch’s path, he crossed and David Wilson was unlucky to see his effort go wide.
The visitors then deservedly made the breakthrough with a goal that proves that being alert and taking gambles can reap rewards. Johnny Henson collected the ball in midfield in a wide area, before cutting in and striking towards goal from the angle of the penalty area. It was too hot for the home keeper to handle, and it spilled out to the onrushing Stevie Nicholl, who had anticipated the fumble, and he slotted home from close range to make it 1-0 to the Wessie.
Between the goal and the end of the first half, the game was mostly played in the midfield area, with neither goalkeeper having to make many saves. Both sets of players were giving everything for the cause and this resulted in a competitive, well contested game.
In the 2nd half, it was the hosts who seized the initiative. Their midfield started to press higher up the pitch to push the Wessie defence back. After a few near misses, they were back on level terms. With some confusion over a player who was down injured caused some players to stop as they were expecting the referee’s whistle due to it being a head knock, the game raged on and the ball landed at an unmarked Nazarene striker’s feet, and he made no mistake in crashing a low shot into the net from 8 yards out to make it 1-1. This was a bitter pill for the Westwood players to swallow, but the old adage rings true, always play to the whistle.
The last 10 minutes seen the game go from end to end, with both sides creating chances, but neither could sneak a winner which in the end, would have been harsh on either side. |
